DESIGN PHILOSOPHY - A Landscape on the Cusp
The landscape design aims to capture the heightened experience of being located on a threshold. The threshold of land and water; the threshold of country level
administrative districts.
Administratively, the project site lies at the very edge of the district of Meilan (Beautiful Orchid) with an extraordinary outlook across Nan Du River into the next district of Qiongshan (Jade Mountain). Geographically, the project site is situated on the Eastern River Banks with an westward outlook towards the Nan Du River.
The idea that the quiet contemplation that one experiences when observing beyond ones place of solitude and seclusion, is heightened when the subject being observed carries obvious or even subtle characteristic differences to that which is within. Watching pedestrians pass by from inside a restaurant or looking through an airplane window are examples of such moments.
DESIGN APPROACH
Implementation of the Design Philosophy was achieved through the creation of Landscape Zones of distinct character where key areas or vantage points are
positioned to appreciate the adjacent zone. Exploring subtle and creative means to instill the overriding concept of being on the cusp has led to creative approach to landscape planning, for example:
An Orchid Garden as a resting area over-looking an Undulating Landscape.
The natural flow of people and water that can be viewed upon from secluded pockets. In reality, any view of the Nan Du River can only be experienced from the upper levels of the residential towers. KoLA Ltd’s design approach endeavours to capture the value of the project’s location in an unconventional way.

Haikou Mixed-Use (Phase 2+3A) is currently undergoing its planning stages and involves a major Retail Street along the northern boundary. The Design Concept evolves around the idea of "inspiration" and how it transgresses both from a physical form through to our emotions and vice versa. This experiential ebb and flow is what KOLA intends to instill in the eventual built landscape.

The Concept of this envisaged boutique hotel drew upon the rich history and urban fabric of the San Po Kong area. It was important to capture this as a representation of the intrinsic change of use of the site which was once industrial. 2 Design Approaches were put forth to the client that derived geometries and patterning from the streets and blocks of the local area.

Haikou Mixed-Use (Phase 2+3, D) is currently undergoing its planning stages and involves a major Retail Street along the northern boundary. The Design Concept evolves around the idea of "reflection" and in particular the nature of both calm and dynamic reflections. Mirror Pools and Stainless Steel Sculptures shall be positioned with precise intent throughout the landscape; the overall geometry of pathways shall also emphasize the relationship between the calm and dynamic characteristics.
